Block Captain Description
BLOCK CAPTAIN DESCRIPTION
A Block Captain is the Neighborhood Watch contact person for his/her area. The size of the area varies and can be as small as a cul-de-sac or as large as Squire Rd. In the absence of a Block Captain the President is the contact person.
If you do not know who your Block Captain is please use the contact us form on this website or call 484-7048 to ask.
WHAT DOES A BLOCK CAPTAIN DO?
- Introduce him/herself to all neighbors, members and non-members, in the Block Captain's assigned area
- Let neighbors know about the Neighborhood Watch
- Provide neighbors with the Block Captain's contact number as well as contact information for the Neighborhood Watch President.
- Neighbors may give the Block Captain their contact information if they choose to.
- Ask neighbors to contact the Block Captain and let the Block Captain know after any call to the police. They should NOT call the Block Captain first if they feel the police need to be called.
- Make sure that neighbors are aware that neither the Block Captain nor the Neighborhood Watch is an enforcement agency of any sort. We are also not affiliated with or part of the Sheriff’s Office. We are a registered Neighborhood Watch with the Sheriff’s Office Community Oriented Policing Unit. We are registered as the Regency Park Neighborhood Watch. The Neighborhood Watch's role is to be extra eyes and ears for the Sheriff’s Office.
- If there is an alert or announcement that needs to go out to members the President will call the Block Captain who will then contact members.
- The Block Captain will distribute fliers to the Block Captain's area for meetings or events we want to encourage non-members to attend.
- The Block Captain will contact the President and/or other Block Captains to alert them about issues that arise in the Block Captain's area and issues that could possibly affect other parts of our watch area.
- If a neighbor in the Block Captain's watch area (member or non-member) chooses to they can contact the Block Captain for a “vacation watch” on their home. The Block Captain will alert the Neighborhood Watch group and all members will participate in the vacation watch. This would mean increasing patrols past the neighbor's home and alerting police to suspicious activity noted during the time they are gone.
- Identify vacant homes in the area and keep an eye on those as well.
- As appropriate, the Block Captain is the line of communication between the neighborhood watch and members and/or non-members in your area.
